Ron Paul Libertarians Transforming GOP

The Libertarian Party could well be considering folding and dropping out of the game. Why? Because the Republican Party is being transformed by Ron Paul's rEVOLutionaries and will carry the banner of liberty for a long time to come.

"But Ron Paul is pretty old. This is his last run."

No matter. The future belongs to Republicans like Rand Paul and Justin Amash. And to other champions of liberty who are willing to run as Republicans. And that's a future that favors you.

Heading into the South Carolina GOP Primary there have been 20 televised debates and untold national news stories in which Ron Paul has had an opportunity to voice libertarian ideas ... more exposure of libertarian ideas in 6 months than the Libertarian Party was able to achieve in 40 years.

In state after state, Ron Paul has been polling on average about 20% of Republican voters with an every day unstoppable mushrooming of exposure, enthusiasm ... and acceptance. If an Obama dictatorship and the plunging of America into bankruptcy and poverty can be prevented in this election cycle by Mitt Romney, then libertarian influence within the Republican Party might easily be 50% or higher by the next election cycle.

"Romney is no libertarian."

True, but neither is Romney a dictator like Obama. And Romney's solutions will be very different from his past if he doesn't have to deal with an 85% Democratic legislature like he struggled with as Chief Executive of Massachusetts. Because of pressure from Tea Party Republicans and the activists in Ron Paul's movement, Romney would be very restrained, certainly reducing government spending and debt over time, and quickly eliminating Obama's insane regulations which strangle business and lead America into poverty.

Libertarians can handle Romney while they continue to strengthen and grow their clout within the Republican Party. Surely you've noticed the death spasms of the wishy-washy GOP of "go along to get along" and the Neoconservativism of George W. Bush's allies. Ron Paul has changed the Republican Party forever, and the libertarian momentum cannot be stopped.

"But the Libertarian Party is 99.9% pure."

Yes, just like the Communist Party pushes for pure communism. But communists have advanced their agenda far more completely using the Democratic Party than they could ever have hoped to with the Communist Party. When ego-vested stubbornness hides behind the label "purity" the result is self-defeat.

It is said that history is written by the winners. A hundred years from now the Libertarian Party might be mentioned in history books with a sentence or two, or a small paragraph. But the transformation of the Republican Party and the success of libertarians within the Republican Party will be the subject matter of entire volumes. By running twice for President as a Republican, Ron Paul has proven to be a winner.

Ron Paul's Victory on the Night of January 3rd

'Tis the season to be jolly ... libertarians!

It now appears Ron Paul will place first in the Iowa Caucuses held on the night of January 3rd.

Newt Gingrich will place second. Mitt Romney will place third. Rick Perry will place fourth.

Ron Paul's Iowa victory doesn't provide many delegates to the Republican National Convention, but it does have enormous impact on the American national dialogue.

On the one hand, the movement behind Ron Paul appears somewhat old-line conservative, but on the other hand it contains revolutionary elements. The American War of Independence and establishment of the United States was a wonderful advance in mankind's evolution toward non-coercive political infrastructure. But obviously the American experiment did not finish the job. Mankind still has a way to go to establish full political liberty once and for all time.

The American Founders, for all their genius, were nonetheless limited to the perceptions of their day. Like scientists who cannot yet see an entire picture, their reasoning was boxed in by what they could see at the time. The activists behind Ron Paul have in some very important respects "jumped out of the box." Their understanding of the moral basis of political liberty and the spiritual basis of political liberty has the advantage of over 250 additional years of human progress since the American founding.

Barack Obama recently gave a speech in which he tried to convince someone that Teddy Roosevelt's policies of a hundred years ago were right for today (and by implication he himself is the spiritual reincarnation of Teddy Roosevelt). Ron Paul supporters don't play such games. Instead, they look to logic and common sense and perception which is not blinded by preconceived ideas. Whereas Obama imagines himself a "progressive," Ron Paul's supporters are on the cutting edge of human progress.

So a Ron Paul victory means a far broader public discussion of liberty ideas and much deeper public awareness of human beings' deep spiritual craving for political liberty. Some might imagine such a discussion and awareness could have been experienced 40 or 50 years ago if libertarians had been willing to focus on winning elections. But, as the Bible points out, there is a season for everything.

Anyway, with Ron Paul's victory, it appears that the season for libertarian ideas is finally in full bloom. The movement has been called the Ron Paul Revolution, but it actually is the inevitable advancement of human political evolution.

Iowans apparently pay attention to changing seasons. Thank you, Iowa!

Libertarian Solution: Rent-a-Government

Victor Hugo once famously wrote you cannot resist an idea whose time has come. Obviously liberal-progressives (properly labeled "fascist socialists") resist libertarian ideas even beyond paranoia, as if the world would utterly burn up in flames if men and women were free to determine their own lives.

Yet the impulse to liberty is ever-present in men and women, and is powerfully promoted by the natural energies of the universe. Therefore, the last 150 years of Marxist thought has been answered in the last 50 years or so by libertarian ideas gaining ever more wide-spread prominence.

So what is the next idea whose time has come? It can't be political success in any current system because current systems depend on a desire to triumph over others, and the desire to triumph over others is antithetical to the libertarian impulse.

The next progress for libertarians may come from a new concept called "Rent-a-Government."

Socialism has run it's course. Governments everywhere ... federal governments, state governments, county governments, city governments ... are bankrupt financially (sometimes not even able to pay their bills or their employees) and leading their constituents into conditions of poverty and misery. People who feel creative impulses and want to produce prosperity for themselves and their neighbors cannot gain traction under today's systems. What alternatives do creative people have? They can stay and "go down with the ship," they can leave and "seek greener pastures," or....

They can pass the hat, ask for donations, and call for rescue.

"Who you gonna call?"

No, not Ghostbusters.

"Who you gonna call?"

"Rent-a-Government!"

Rent-a-Government is a community service organization funded by voluntary donations which provides the very most basic essential services which people want from governments ... security from local bad guys, defense against invasion from other areas, adjudication of disputes, facilitation of compensatory justice.

When your automobile is crashed maybe beyond repair, you call Rent-a-Car. When your system of government is broken seemingly beyond fixes, you call Rent-a-Government. No politicians. No voting wars. No legislatures. No lobbyists. No greedy unions. No corruption. No hassle. Rent-a-government provides only services that are necessary and only what people can afford through voluntary donations.

Especially for smaller towns and counties which are hopelessly bankrupt, Rent-a-Government organizations are life savers in more ways than one because by using Rent-a-Government there is no taxation and no local regulations of a proactive nature. Thus businesses are allowed to grow and prosper. Inventors, discoverers of new processes, and entrepreneurs are attracted to the area by the promise of freedom and profit. Increased productive activity brings renewed prosperity to everyone in the area. Everybody breathes a sigh of relief and becomes much happier than they were under the old system.

Deep Foundational Goal Assures Libertarian Success

Libertarians are most successful when they learn that not wanting particular outcomes or circumstances, in the sense of not considering outcomes so important that their peace is in jeopardy, actually puts them in their power, in an enormously strong position. Being in their power in an enormously strong position ... everything they really want is gained.

In a way we could say wanting nothing on earth gains us everything in heaven. But by "heaven" we don't have to mean some place in the sky, do we? We could merely mean that we haven't "sold our soul", so to speak. We are intact. We are whole. We are our own person ... like Howard Roark.

Howard Roark lives by his spirit. If outer circumstances do not seem favorable, he laughs. If everything seems to turn against him, he laughs. If people declare they are out to destroy him, he laughs. Roark's joy cannot be touched because he has chosen to stay in touch with the natural joy inside himself.

If we were to want something outside ourselves more than we want our joy, then we would experience the pain of wanting when we could be experiencing the joy we already have inside ourselves. We experience what we choose to experience.

Does this mean we don't have preferences? Of course not. Our spirit has many preferences. But our spirit is not attached to any of them. Our spirit prefers the challenge of freedom over "guaranteed" security. Our spirit prefers that we earn our way rather have some government providing our welfare with stolen money. Our spirit rejoices in an economically free society and does not favor government manipulation of the economy.

But preferences don't say, "I have to have it or I will die!" A preference says something more like, "If it doesn't work out .... Oh, well! Whatever! Not having it is not going to destroy my peace."

A happy laughing child has preferences. A spoiled child has wants. A spoiled child uses anger, depression, grievances and various other painful mechanisms to prove that having one's way is more important than experiencing one's inner peace.

If we really want to be successful with libertarian goals, we must have a deeper, more foundational goal of teaching ourselves as never before that by wanting nothing outside ourselves we have everything we ever really wanted.

We want to say to ourselves often, many times a day:

"By wanting nothing, I am free! By being free, I have everything!"

The Value of Ron Paul Republicans

In the recent debate among Republican Presidential candidates at the Ronald Reagan Library, the narrator brought up the subject of the government mandating people to buy health insurance, and asked generally how many of the candidates present believe government mandates are wrong. Most replied they were against government mandates.

Then Ron Paul, with a certain spiritual satisfaction, pointed out that practically every government program is forced on people with a mandate. Whoa! How many people listening to the debate suddenly felt a padlock opening in their mind? You can hear the tumblers clicking. "Wait a minute! He's got a point!" And we know that minds opening will eventually lead to libertarian thinking, right?

And the spiritual satisfaction that Ron Paul felt is the truest deepest kind of satisfaction, because in truth the libertarian position is a spiritual position.

Our spiritual guidance leads us individually to the greatest possible well-being. This includes at a minimum: (a) inspiring us with inventions and breakthroughs; (b) inspiring us with course corrections when we've drifted off base (i.e., teaching us lessons we need), (c) inspiring us to be in the right place at the right time to benefit ourselves and everyone; and (d) inspiring us to help others open spiritually so they can also hear their inner spiritual voice guiding them.

From the perspective of the human condition it can be said to be all about spiritual guidance vs. ego guidance. Spiritual guidance leads to the fullness of life; ego guidance leads ultimately to destruction and death.

This entire inspiration and spiritual guidance process works best (for example, inventions can be developed most easily, lessons can be learned most quickly, being in the right place at the right time is most facilitated, etc.) when we are free of political coercion, free of our political system trying to force us to do something different than our spiritual guidance would have us do. Maybe this can be summed up by a statement such as "Our spirit is free and wants us to live in a political system which reflects that freedom."

Quieting your intellect for a moment and listening to your spirit, you can ask inside if there is a need for government. And if the answer is "yes," then what purpose would that government serve and what would spiritually guided government look like?

The answer is something like this: In earth many individuals will be tempted to let their ego guide them rather than their spirit. So there is a chance they would initiate killing, destroying, fraud, etc. out of ego-vested interests. So as a reminder of spiritual laws, and as an infrastructure for response to such violations, the establishment of a government is spiritually guided.

Such reminder and response benefits every person, regardless of whether such persons support the government intellectually or financially ... much the same principle as when a church doesn't hesitate to help and benefit even those who do not support the church intellectually or financially. (Notice that a spiritually guided government is funded voluntarily.) The principle here can be summed up in the statement: "Although government reminds people what are rights violations and responds to apparent rights violations, the government does not force people to support it and therefore does not itself violate any one's rights."

Clearly a government which allows political liberty best serves one's spiritual guidance ... so it's not surprising that such a government allows a people to be "full of spirit," unlike in communist countries where people are said to be "spiritless," and in other kinds of socialist countries where people feel "spirit-drained."

Since Ron Paul's messages are in accordance with people's spiritual guidance, he is helping every pastor and priest, and every spiritual person whose support of the cause of liberty is so crucial, to remember that a spiritual government is in fact a Libertarian Government.

Why Did Ron Paul Do So Good In Iowa?

Why is Ron Paul so successful in spreading the libertarian message? Maybe it's because he lives the second lesson of the Course in Political Miracles:

"Nothing comes easily if I hold in my mind contradictory desires."

The law of non-contradiction works powerfully in my mind. If I desire one thing while at the same time desiring a second thing which ultimately contradicts the first, then my mind is split and serves both goals, creating neither very quickly, and maybe sabotaging the achievement of both.

Contradictory desires rob me of my potential, not because it is sinful or evil to hold conflicting goals, but because I cannot desire with my whole being a goal and its antithesis.

I know I cannot eat my cake and still have it. But I may not be aware of how many ultimately contradictory goals I hold in my mind. This week I will search my mind for goals which are ultimately contradictory.

How many people do I know who speak glowingly about political freedom but then turn around and support some form of government activism? Are they pretending their goals are compatible? If so, why haven't they looked deep enough to see the contradiction?

Am I doing this with any of my goals? Are my goals really, really, really compatible? Or am I kidding myself?

During this week, as my temporary goals come to mind one by one I will ask myself this question:

"If I could have the one thing I really, really, REALLY want ... would this other temporary goal I am supporting continue to be a goal I would hold onto?"

For example, if my ultimate political goal is a social structure which reflects the freedom of my spirit, then would I continue supporting government activities other than the simple protection of citizens and their property?

Or if my goal as a political activist is the simple protection of citizens and their property, would I continue to support a law which relies on the immoral act of extorting money or property from people (taxation) for its purposes.

Or if my goal as a politician is the elimination of involuntary servitude, would I continue spending a great amount of time and energy attempting to make a taxation-supported government more efficient?

What temporary goals am I pursuing which contradict my ultimate goals?

Every morning this week as I waken to a new day, I remind myself:

"Today I make my life simple by not pursuing desires which ultimately contradict my deepest, truest goals."

Also, as I go through each day, I take a moment every hour to close my eyes and repeat to myself a few times:

"Let me keep in mind what I really, really, REALLY want."

Then 3 or 4 times during the day, I close my eyes for 5 whole minutes and repeat to myself today's lesson:

"Nothing comes easily if I hold in mind contradictory desires."

At the end of each day I give myself a few moments of pleasure by remembering how good it feels when I let go of contradictory goals in order to fully pursue my deepest, truest goal. I might even say to myself before I go to sleep:

"This is fun ... creating what I REALLY want."

Libertarian Death Wish

Once upon a time there were three little sheep. But not really … because it is always misleading to judge by surface appearances, and these were political “sheep” wanting to be leader of the flock.

One of our little “sheep” was really a wolf in sheep’s clothing. His intent was to enslave the flock and make them all beholden to him, begging for their life. His plan was to redistribute the grazing wealth in such a way as to provide all sheep with just enough life to assure an ongoing food supply for himself and his allied wolves who had also infiltrated the flock. Because he wasn’t really a sheep himself, he had found it necessary to hone skills in the art of disguise, trickery, and demagoguery. His supporters wished to call him “Der Fuhrer,” but he preferred to be known as “Eloquent.” He had become a master of appearing honorable while deceiving, therefore he could figure on the support of about 45% of the flock.

The second of our three little sheep was in a way a “black sheep” in that his tendency at every turn to say “Naaahhh!” instead of “Baaahhh” to the wolves’ policies seemed fairly radical. He actually believed the flock would experience a much fuller life if every aspect of their lives was not regulated by a powerful leader and a powerful leader’s cohorts. “Love’woolution!” was his campaign slogan. Relying on truth and logic, he did not attempt to cultivate charismatic speaking skills or create a “looks like a leader” persona. Even though he was known by the generally unappealing nickname of “Naaahhh,” he did enjoy the ardent support of maybe 3-4% of the flock.

The third little sheep was a master consensus builder for problem solving, and presented himself as a thoughtful and strong leader who cared deeply about the flock. But he did seem sometimes to push a seeming solution at the cost of losing consistency of principle. This tendency, along and his willingness to keep his mind open to change, made him sometimes appear not firm of conviction. Many called him by the name “Flipper,” even though about 44% of the flock felt he would make a decent enough leader.

As anyone can see from the numbers, if the supporters of Flipper and Naaahhh worked together their combined support would defeat the wolf as well as the hideous agenda of the wolves.

But the plot thickens. Unbeknown to themselves, the supporters of Naaahhh had a secret subconscious death wish. On one level, they knew that their principles, their purposes, even their lives, would be the first to go if the wolf continued to gain successes. Which means they knew on some level that refusing to support Flipper amounted to supporting the wolf, thus selling out their principles and their lives. But because of their death wish, they began to spread amongst themselves the exact opposite idea: the twisted thought that the act of joining with the Flipper supporters to defeat the wolf would be selling out their principles. They began championing the idea that Flipper would be not just an imperfect leader, but would be the same as the wolf. Most justified the psychic influence of their death wish by stating the obvious: “Supporting the lesser of two evils only gives you a lesser evil.” They ignored the fact that a lesser evil allows a greater good to survive. Others began to ignore reality altogether and say, “Flipper as leader would be the same as the wolf leader … exactly the same.”

You know the end of the story. Death wishes lead to death. The supporters of Naaahhh refused to support Flipper. The wolf and his allies became stronger than ever. The wolf’s henchwolves systematically destroyed everything the Naaahhh supporters stood for. The wolves knew who their worst enemies were, and those sheep who supported Naaahhh were the first to be sheared, skinned alive, and eaten. It wasn’t long before Naaahhh’s ideas and principles disappeared from the general flock dialogue.

Some would say this is not an unhappy story because “give me liberty or give me death” is a cool sounding idea to the ego, and besides there is a prophecy which claims Naaahhh’s ideas and principles became hidden in the genes of many generations of sheep, but will someday resurface at the end of times. Nonetheless a few ancient sheep to old for even the wolves to eat still remember the words of The Battle Hymn of the Crucified Shepherd: “As He died to make sheep holy, let us LIVE to make sheep free!”

Lesson 40 For Ron Paul and Ayn Rand Enthusiasts

One of the themes of these lessons is that we are all in this together. I have to look far below surface appearances to see people's deepest interests, but at the deepest levels no one has any interests different than anyone else. As Ayn Rand points out, human beings are spiritual beings whose fundamental needs do not vary.

This course has repeatedly pointed out that every person's spirit wants and needs political liberty. Not only my interest but every one's interest is served most effectively if libertarians who happen to love God help libertarians who happen to be atheists, atheist libertarians help God-loving libertarians, and all to work together to produce political liberty.

With this in mind, it can also be seen that the process of creating political liberty will be enormously sped up when libertarians of all stripes enlist the aid of ministers and church people.

A very high percentage of Americans say they either believe in God on faith or have had experiences so amazing or miraculous that they absolutely know there is a higher power at work. All these many Americans are more deeply influenced by spiritual arguments than the arguments of economists or philosophers.

If the truth spreads among this very high percentage of Americans that their God wants them voting for and working for political liberty on earth, then political parties who want to rely on government for solutions will soon be relics of the past.

If this very high percentage of Americans becomes convinced that their getting into heaven is enhanced every time they bring a voter into the Libertarian Party or support a libertarian candidate from another party, it's not going to take too long for bureaucrats to start scurrying to obtain job skills that are salable in a free and honest market.

But to achieve this goal, libertarians need ministers and church people working for them. This requires three steps:

(A) Set Up Churches

Those libertarians who are more spiritually oriented should consider setting up churches which specifically teach that God wants political liberty on earth so that men and women can learn to make their own moral choices without some government trying to "save" them from mistakes and make their choices for them. The cause of liberty would be enormously enhanced if there were churches which specifically teach "Liberty in earth, as it is in heaven."

(B) Support Libertarian Ministers

Many intellectually inclined libertarians who don't like to think in terms of spirit could at least serve liberty's cause by recognizing that libertarian ministers are allies and deserve good will and moral support. There is no logical reason why even the most sinless Objectivist cannot cease throwing stones for awhile and say, "We are all in this together. Let's work together."

(C) Help Ministers Teach Liberty

Intellectually inclined libertarians have the intelligence to shift their thinking just enough to understand the language of ministers and then teach ministers in ministers' language why God would want people taking responsibility for themselves instead of having government assuming responsibility for people.

This week the goal of my lesson is to call upon libertarians to join with ministers and do what it takes to help ministers work for political liberty. I make this call by taking the first steps myself, leading by example.

My assignment for myself this week is to conduct a letter writing campaign. My goal is to write several letters each day, as many as my time will allow, to ministers of churches in my region. In these letters I will talk to ministers about freedom in general and ask them about political freedom specifically. I might write something like:

As you are well aware, Jesus taught freedom, promising his disciples, "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." There seems to be the implication throughout the teachings of Jesus that the state of being he calls "heaven" is indeed total freedom. In light of the prayer given by Jesus, "Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven," I find my mind constantly asking a question which maybe you can help me with: Should we be teaching that God wants us to have liberty on earth ... political liberty?

Ministers will usually respond to questions that sound sincere and humble, asking for help. The goal of these letters is not to convince ministers of anything, but only to plant seeds in their minds. Perhaps these ministers have never thought much about what their God wants for people politically. More likely, they have purposely avoided thinking any thoughts different than "mainstream" thoughts about politics in order to not alienate their congregations or bureaucrats who might be inclined to tamper with their church's tax-exempt status. Regardless of how they have thought in the past, my lesson to myself in this is that seeds planted DO tend to grow.

If some of the ministers respond to my letters by saying something like, "Yes, God wants us to have political liberty on earth," I might write a follow-up letter suggesting that a course on freedom be offered some evening at their church. I would emphasize that the course is non-denominational and non-partisan, just something everyone in the congregation could benefit from if they are interested. Ministers are always looking for course ideas to fill their church calendar.

But who would be the teacher of such a course? How about myself? I haven't lived until I've taught a course in a church, right?

If I myself am not ready for this kind of stretch, then perhaps such a course can be taught by one of the local libertarians who is not widely known to be affiliated with any particular political party.

But the best teacher of all would be the minister himself or herself. People often respect and revere their minister like no one else. I would only need to be artful in my suggesting to the minister that a course on the spiritual reasons why God wants political liberty would be best taught by the minister.

It might not seem by surface appearances that influencing a little class to start in a church would aid the cause of liberty very much. But who can judge these things? What if such a class lit a tremendous fire in just one person and that one person went on to be a great orator, a Martin Luther King, so to speak, for the libertarian movement? Then my efforts would seem worthwhile, yes?

My final step, as I retire each day this week, is to imagine in my mind that my letters are going out and planting seeds which eventually are growing to influence future great champions of liberty. As I visualize someone arising from a dormant state and awakening, I might say aloud, "Liberty's champion has awakened!" Feeling brave I might also add, "If it turns out to be me ... so be it!"

Ron Paul: Favorite of Ayn Rand or Jesus Christ?

In a world of upside-down liberal-progressive ideas of "rights" which claim the laziest non-earner has a so-called "right" to the wealth of a hard-working earner (government redistribution of wealth), Ron Paul is a like a glowing angel standing for the original, logical, moral concept of rights.

But who would be smiling ... Ayn Rand or Jesus Christ?

In Ayn Rand's view, a woman living in a society cannot produce her greatest happiness (and by extension positive values for all) unless all others in the society allow her the freedom to act toward her own goals as she judges appropriate:

The concept of a 'right' pertains only to action— specifically, to freedom of action. It means freedom from physical compulsion, coercion or interference by other men. Thus, for every individual, a right is the moral sanction of a positive— of his freedom to act on his own judgment, for his own goals, by his own voluntary, uncoerced choice. As to his neighbors, his rights impose no obligations on them except of a negative kind: to abstain from violating his rights. -Ayn Rand

Meanwhile, in his revelation for the 21st Century, A Course in Miracles, Jesus Christ does not contradict Ayn Rand but does demonstrate a much broader world view. Whereas Rand focuses mostly on the need for freedom to produce, as if productive activity is a precondition of happiness, Jesus recognizes that happiness is already our natural state if we do not personally sabotage the experience by faulty thinking.

We will not become hopelessly involved in defining happiness and determining the means for achieving it. Our longer practice period today has as its purpose your acceptance of the fact that not only is there a very real connection between the function God gave you and your happiness, but that they are actually identical. God gives you only happiness. Therefore the function He gave you must be [enjoying the experience of] happiness. (ACIM Workbook Lesson 66)

So Jesus would say yes it's true that living in a society a man cannot create the greatest prosperity for all unless the others in the society allow him the freedom to follow his inner spiritual guidance, his inspiration. But even more importantly, he cannot learn to quit sabotaging his happiness unless others in the society allow him the freedom to make mistakes and learn from his mistakes.

For Jesus, rights are a spiritual prerogative which make it possible for miracles to occur.

Remind yourself also that miracles are never taken from one and given to another, and that in asking for your rights you are upholding the rights of everyone. (ACIM Workbook Lesson 77)

Sad to say, Democrats have tried to propagandize us with the idea that special privileges are rights, that it's right to forcibly take from some and give to others who seem to have a need. Some Republicans have been hoodwinked by such propaganda. Other Republicans seem to understand the concept of rights, but seem unaware of the crucial importance of upholding rights consistently.

Enter Ron Paul. In the recent South Carolina GOP debate Ron Paul was asked why he favored the government allowing people to use drugs which are currently illegal and which most people consider harmful. His answer championed consistency: if such usage proves to be harmful to others, it should be prosecuted; but if it harms no one other than the user then it's important to uphold personal freedom of choice.

Hearing that answer, Jesus smiles. Why? Because the freedom to make mistakes and learn from mistakes is crucial to learning how to quit sabotaging one's happiness. [In Christian language, crucial to God's plan for salvation.]

It seems Ron Paul would be a favorite of both Ayn Rand and Jesus Christ. It seems both Ayn Rand and Jesus Christ would say, "Thank you, Ron Paul!"

The Real Question to Ask of Democrats and Republicans

What is the real question people with political concerns should be asking? Maybe to stay focused on the real question we need to know about red herrings.

So ... what is a red herring? For years, we've been misled by a fox hunting fable which claims if two parties were fox hunting and one party wanted to cheat, it would drag a heavily smoked herring, red in color, across the path of the other party's hounds to distract them from finding the scent of the fox.

Although this fable has no basis in reality, if you were to see two parties on the hunt, both dragging red herrings across the landscape, you would be tempted to call the parties Democrats and Republicans, wouldn't you say?

Red herrings: Arguments which distract from the real question.

So in Washington we recently witnessed a fox hunt called "fighting over the 2011 budget to avoid government shutdown." The Republican red herring was: "Government is spending too much, so we must cut costs." The Democrats, as usual, used any number of red herrings having to do with seniors and babies and women who would supposedly die if costs were cut.

No one asked the real question: What is the proper function of government?

Consider a people with no government who are producing and trading with each other, enjoying the struggles and rewards of life, and generally doing what people naturally do. Why would they form a government? Who needs a government, and for what purpose?

This is the question everyone should be asking. All other questions are red herrings.

Last month's article on this site, The Spiritual Foundation of Liberty, pointed to a valid reason for people to form governments, but found no valid reason to create a legislature with legislators who can continually make new man-made (ego-made) laws. Governments which continue to accumulate laws continue to move farther and farther from the original reason for forming the government. Such governments are out of touch with reality, doomed to create misery everywhere they have influence.

Ezra Taft Benson, 13th President and Prophet of the LDS church, once delivered a momentous speech (which hopefully every Mormon reads) entitled The Proper Role of Government. President Benson refers back to the "natural rights of man" concepts held by Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson. Modern libertarians might not agree with every word of his speech, but at least President Benson was asking the real question.

In your ruminations about your country's political state, in your discussions with others regarding political matters, are you wasting your time following red herrings? Or are you constantly asking the real question?

You are a spiritual human being. You experience a physical body, feelings, thoughts, and spiritual impulses. You may have denied your spiritual impulses from time to time, but they are present inside you ... and you know it.

It is your spiritual nature which moves you to do marvelous things. You might be moved to write a wonderful novel, discover a cure for cancer, be a good mother, build a business that produces goods, or rescue a little animal who is trapped. Maybe you are moved to do something you can't even see the value of at first, but you do it because something deep inside you tells you it is right for you to do. That something deep inside you is your spiritual nature.

It is your spiritual nature which speaks to you from deep within saying, "We are all in this together ... every living being. What is truly good for one is good for all. What is truly good for all is good for one."

It is your spiritual nature which also says deep inside you, "It is I who will show you what is truly good."

YOUR THINKING MIND CANNOT SHOW YOU WHAT IS TRULY GOOD

Your thoughts are based on limited information and limited perception. In order to make a correct judgment as to what is truly good, you would have to be 100% completely aware of an inconceivably wide range of factors; past, present, and future. You would have to have certain advance knowledge of all the effects of your judgment on everyone and everything. You would have to be absolutely sure that you didn't have the slightest slanted angle of perception. Who could possibly have this magnitude of information? Who except in the height of fantasy could imagine themselves to have such a totally all-seeing and all-knowing viewpoint? How many times have you been so thoroughly sure you knew the facts upon which to base correct judgment, only to find out later how wrong you were?

Because philosophers and lawyers are just like yourself, subject to limited information and limited perception, neither can you rely on even the very best of scholars using intellectual reasoning to help you discover what is truly good.

YOUR EMOTIONS CANNOT SHOW YOU WHAT IS TRULY GOOD

Your emotions are brought about by your thoughts and ideas. Since your thoughts are based on very limited information and a very limited viewpoint, so are your emotions. Should your thoughts not serve you well, neither will your emotions serve you well, even unto breakdown.

YOUR PHYSICAL BODY CANNOT SHOW YOU WHAT IS TRULY GOOD

Your physical body is literally only a servant doing the bidding of your thoughts and feelings. Would a man ever risk bodily danger for a higher good if his body was his guide?

ONLY YOUR SPIRITUAL NATURE CAN SHOW YOU WHAT IS TRULY GOOD

Your spiritual nature on the other hand, because it is shared with every living being, knows what is truly good for all. Your spiritual nature is present inside you to influence, teach, and guide your thoughts, emotions, and physical body. Whether or not you listen inside yourself to your spiritual nature is another story, but your spiritual nature is inside of you waiting to be heard.

In any situation, if you quiet your thoughts, quiet your emotions, quiet the urges of your body, and listen inside yourself to your spirit, you know what is the truly right thing to say or do. You don't need a legislature, or a philosopher, or a psychologist, or a church authority of any kind to tell you what is right. If you are honest with yourself, you know the answer is inside of you. Your spirit is your guide.

THE BEGINNINGS OF LAW

But you don't always listen inside yourself to your spirit, do you? Maybe sometimes you listen to your thoughts, emotions, or even the urges of your body, instead of listening to your spirit. Does your spirit know that you are not going to always listen deep inside? Of course. Your spirit knows about human shortcomings and mistakes.

So your spirit says, "Here ... in case you forget to listen inside yourself, I'll let you know in advance that I, your spirit, am never going to guide you to murder, nor am I ever going to guide you to commit adultery, nor am I ever going to guide you to steal, nor am I ever going to guide you to bear false witness against your neighbor. If you want to, you can call these laws."

Thus laws are born. In the beginning, laws are born of the spirit ... as reminders.

LAWS NOT OF THE SPIRIT

After a long time, when the beginning has been forgotten, laws are born not of the spirit, but of the egos of men and women ... true or false?

Listen inside. Do not listen to your intellectual mind's reasoning. Listen to your spirit. What do you hear? The laws made up by men and women are not necessarily the laws of your spiritual nature, true or false?

Therein lies the first and main reason why governments, legislatures, and laws should always be suspect. They may not be in rapport with the spiritual nature inside of men and women. They may be instruments of men and women's egos and not instruments of the spirit.

GOVERNMENT GUIDED BY THE SPIRITUAL NATURE

Yet the spiritual nature of men and women could move them to set up a government, true or false? Listen inside, not to your intellect. Does your spirit inside say yes or no?

How many laws would a government need if it was based on men and women's spiritual nature? Three? Five? Ten, like the ten commandments? Probably very few, wouldn't you say? Listen inside and see what you hear.

How many laws would it take to assure that you would be a good citizen even if you didn't listen inside to your spirit at all times? A half-dozen basic laws having to do with stealing, murdering, raping ... that sort of thing? Or would it take 25 or 30 good laws written as basic principles to remind you? Listen inside to your spirit.

Would it take hundreds of thousands of pages of tax codes and regulations to make you a good citizen? Listen inside. What is your spirit saying?

NO NEED FOR A LEGISLATURE

So why not write up a constitution that outlines 25 or 30 good laws in basic principle and creates only two branches of government, the judiciary and the executive to make sure these few good laws are followed?

Another branch of government to invent new laws is not only unnecessary, but practically assures deviation from your original intent, true or false? Because if you set up a branch of government whose purpose is to make new laws, then when those law makers come to work in the morning, in order to feel good about themselves doing their job they are going to want to do what? Yes ... they are going to want to make up new laws.

What if no new laws are needed? No matter. Those law makers get paid to invent laws and they are going to want to do their job, right?

So if you are listening carefully inside yourself to your spirit you will hear that it doesn't take a lot of laws to keep you reminded to be a good citizen and once those basic few laws are identified you don't need a legislature making up new laws.

GOVERNMENT PROJECTS MOST PEOPLE WANT

But what about all the good things that governments claim they do? Let's look at building interstate highways, for example. Let's listen inside and see if your spiritual nature wants you to have interstate highways built by your government? Do you hear "yes"? Does that seem to be a good idea to your spirit? If so, now listen inside for a "yes" or "no" answer to these questions: Do you need a legislature to build an interstate highway? Do you need new laws to build an interstate highway? No. All you need is an executive branch which is given the authority to spend money for the projects earmarked by people when they voluntarily send in their dollars.

Suppose the executive branch of government broadcasts a notice that says, "All those in favor of interstate highways, please send in your money voluntarily and it will be earmarked for interstate highways." Your spiritual nature would not be offended by such a notice, true or false? Listen inside. For a little while, suspend any intellectual arguments your mind wants to make as to why such a system would be difficult to make work. Maybe it wouldn't. Maybe it would. Your intellect couldn't possibly know because it doesn't have all the information it would need to make a judgment. For the moment, just listen inside and see if your spirit would be offended by such a notice.

No, your spirit is not offended. Why? First, because your spirit lit up at the thought of interstate highways, so interstate highways must be serving the common good. Second, and very important, your spirit is not offended by voluntary donations. Nobody is being forced against their will to pay for the highways.

YOUR SPIRITUAL NATURE DOES NOT USE FORCE

But what if the executive department of the government tried to force people to pay taxes to pay for the highways? Now your spirit might be offended, might it not? Because your spirit doesn't ever force you to be good or do good things. Your spirit suggests. Your spirit guides. Your spirit urges. Your spirit might even give you a very strong nudge in some direction if it is really important. But your spirit doesn't force you, does it? Your spirit leaves you free to make mistakes and learn from your mistakes.

Any proper government, guided by your spiritual nature, would leave you free to make mistakes and learn from your mistakes just as your spirit leaves you free, true or false? Listen inside.

Would your spirit ever guide you to use force? Yes, it may so guide you in certain situations. Your spirit might say inside of you, "It is wrong for that bully to be beating up on those kids! Go stop him!" You could very well be guided to use force to stop someone when that someone is breaking one of the basic spiritual laws, true or false?

The same principle applies to governments. Your spiritual nature would not be offended if your government used force to stop someone from breaking the basic spiritual laws. In fact, your spirit might rejoice when force is used in this manner. Putting a stop to, let's say, a neighboring dictator's brutal initiation of force would be a spiritually appropriate response. For this reason you feel deep inside yourself that the establishment of responsive armies and police departments is moral, as long as there are safeguards against the abuse of power.

A THIRD BRANCH OF GOVERNMENT

What if the executive branch of your government began to use force not to stop others who had initiated force in the first place, but to further the ego-vested interests of men and women in positions of executive power? Or what if the judiciary branch of your government began to make judgments based not on the spiritual intent of the basic laws, but based on the ego-vested interests of men and women in positions to render ego-motivated judgments? In other words, what if your government started abusing its power?

Your inner voice, the voice of your spirit, might guide you thus: "In the hopes of guarding against the abuse of power, set up a third branch of government made up of elected representatives whose sole purpose is to monitor the activities of the other two branches of government to make sure they are not straying from their original mandates. Call this third branch of government ‘Congress,' if it pleases you. But, like the executive and judiciary branches of government, this third branch would have no power to make new laws. This third branch of government would only serve as auditor of the other two branches of government and as a 'Watchdog of Liberty'."

But a watchdog has a bite as well as a bark, true or false? So this third branch of government would be given authority to dismiss the officials who are abusing power and oversee their replacement through specified processes. Members of this third branch of government would not get bored from lack of work. They would be auditing everything the other two branches of government were doing, making sure there were no abuses.

YET ANOTHER SAFEGUARD

Remember, your spiritual nature is interested in you having a system of government which closely approximates the freedom that your spirit itself enjoys. If your government, which was created in the first place for the convenience of your spirit, began to take away freedoms that would rightly be yours if there were no government, then that government is no longer serving your spirit. So your spirit favors safeguards, true or false?

What if a particular political party became very adept at selling itself to the public and won effective control of all three branches of your government? Your spirit would see a problem with such a setup, true or false? Your spirit inside of you doesn't say, "The more the government is being controlled by one party, the better." Your spirit inside of you says, "The more safeguards against power accumulation, the better."

So in your original constitution you would be guided to include a clause that specifies that if a particular political party and its allies dominate the auditor/watchdog branch of government, then the executive branch of government must be operated by members of a different and opposing political party. The mechanisms for resignations and replacements of officials would be spelled out in your constitution.

SUMMARY

Your spirit wants liberty safeguarded with as many safeguards as possible, because freedom is who you are in spirit. Freedom is your spiritual birthright. Your spirit wants to be free and be in control of your life, not be dampened and controlled by the egos of others. Your spirit works to free you of pain, sickness, suffering, and death; and bring you the experience of happiness, and joy, and love. But your spirit needs freedom to do its work. A little bit of government is helpful and guided by your spirit. But a government that does not enhance your freedom cannot be tolerated by your spirit, true or false?

You have been told to bring the darkness to the light, and guilt to holiness. And you have also been told that error must be corrected at its source. Therefore, it is the tiny part of your self, the little thought that seems split off and separate, that the Holy Spirit needs. The rest is fully in God's keeping, and needs no guide. But this wild and delusional thought needs help, because, in its delusions, it thinks it is the Son of God, whole and omnipotent, sole ruler of the kingdom it set apart to tyrannize by madness into obedience and slavery.

Libertarian Answer To Obama's Job-Killing

The American public has been screaming "government needs to do something to create jobs!" President Obama, after two years of shoving his liberal-progressive agenda down people's throats, finally woke up after last November's election and said, "Oh, I get it! Americans want jobs!" At which point he redoubled his efforts to create business-government partnerships.

Unfortunately nothing dampens an economy and kills overall job creation more than business-government partnerships. Read "The Birth of Plenty," by William J. Bernstein; or to really understand read the greatest novel ever written, Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged.

Libertarians have a seldom mentioned ideal: the separation of business and state. This does not mean that government forsakes its duty to prosecute fraud or assault when practiced by businesses. It does mean government allows the "invisible hand" of the free market to regulate business; government stands aside and says to business, "may the force be with you," knowing that the "force" of the free market is a much safer regulator of business practice than government could ever be.

Business regulation by the free market is infinitely more efficient because meddling politicians and government bureaucrats are incapable of knowing every single factor world-wide, past, present, and future which they would have to know to reasonably regulate. Therefore, they set up their petty little regulatory dictatorships and regulate blindly, which means insanely.

Things get worse when businesses join in cahoots with government. Suddenly there are no competitive forces to keep either the partnering businessman or bureaucrat honest. They reign like thugs. Even if they don't become totally corrupt, they relax into inefficiency and snail's pace reform. Government partnership with select businesses discourages those who do not get selected. Independent invention and entrepreneurship start dying out.

Libertarians tend to turn voters off with their incessant yapping about marijuana, seat belts and TSA screening. Yet all those pet issues easily become solved by applying the overall libertarian answer to saving and prospering any country: separation of business and state.

A Winning Book For Libertarians

The bottom-line argument for libertarianism is a spiritual argument. Your spirit is free and needs you to be politically free so you can be guided to the fullest expression of life. End of discussion.

Almost as compelling an argument for a libertarian structure of society is the ethical/moral argument: people being forced to comply with the man-made dictates of those in power is, pure and simple - immoral.

But what if you find yourself in a discussion with a leftist who just doesn't care about either fullness of life or moral ethics, someone for whom the end justifies the means, and the end is his or her fantasy of a politically manipulated imagined to be "fair" economic system?

Then you might have to fall back on your arguments based on economics, right?

So it pays for libertarians to learn a few principles of economics. And it might even be beneficial to learn something of the history of economics in order to best refute the faulty premises that have become popular in this all too subjective and far from scientific field of study.

But most economics history books are tedious and boring, right?

Most, but not this one: The Making of Modern Economics by Mark Skousen, which reads like a "stranger than fiction" biography/history of economists and economic thought written by a joy-filled fun-loving author.

Although this excellent biography/history by Skousen contains seemingly as many quirky stories and facts about well-known and lesser-known economists as there are random data points in some modern economist's graph of his own confusion, the underlying logic of the study of economics shines through, and the truly foolish thinking of the vast majority of influential economists is artfully exposed.

Whereas a spiritually tuned-in libertarian might use A Course in Miracles to prove the need for political freedom while an emotionally charged libertarian might use Atlas Shrugged, a libertarian who is willing to "mix it up" in the realm of economics might have a ton of fun using The Making of Modern Economics.

Libertarian Mantra Exposes Obama Cruelty

President Obama has no choice but to offer you up as a sacrifice to his god. His worship of the illusion that there can be a "common good" for society which transcends the good of individuals in the society demands your sacrifice.

Yet libertarians fiddle.

Are you amazed that libertarians blab about marijuana while the economy of the entire world is crashing? Are you astounded that libertarians nit-pick about bedroom issues while the entire populace is being reduced to slavery? Many libertarians spend their time forever addressing puny little issues which (a) make them look to the public like petty teenagers, and (b) serve only to side-track the public’s thought from an infinitely more important underlying truth.

Okay, let's suppose you want to do some real good for the libertarian cause. How about addressing the one and only truly meaningful issue? Maybe a little story would illustrate what libertarians should be talking about.

One upon a time there was a society comprised of 10 individuals. Nine of them voted that their society would be better off if the tenth one was worked to death. They called it the “common good.” Before long there were only nine individuals in their society. Oh, well.

So then eight of the nine decided that for the common good almost all property of the ninth one (who was the richest) should be confiscated and redistributed among the eight who were doing the deciding. After all, that was the greatest good for the greatest number, right? Of course one day they woke up and only the eight were remaining in their society. The ninth had disappeared. Oh, well.

Then seven of the eight huddled and made a plan which would force the eighth one (who was the best producer) to work most of his time not for himself but for the huddling seven. From one of ability, to those who need. What could be more fair? Unfortunately. the eighth one finally went on strike. Threatening the eighth one didn't work. They finally had to resort to torture and solitary confinement. So there were only seven left in their society anyway. Oh, well.

The story could continue, but you get the point. The “greatest good” for a society cannot come at the expense of any individual in the society. Society as a whole can only experience its greatest good when all members of society are experiencing their own greatest good. There is no such thing as a "good of society" divorced from the good of its members.

The Obama belief that some members of the society have to be sacrificed in order for the society as a whole to experience its highest good is worse than unenlightened ... it is morally depraved and evil. But this truth must be voiced at every possible opportunity by libertarians.

In fact, the essence of libertarianism, the very definition of libertarianism, can be stated in two words: no sacrifice.

Jesus Christ throughout his revelation for the 21st century, A Course in Miracles, teaches the evil of sacrifice. Here is one excerpt:

"Be certain any answer to a problem the Holy Spirit solves will always be one in which no one loses. And this must be true because He asks no sacrifice of anyone. An answer which demands the slightest loss to anyone has not resolved the problem, but has added to it, and made it greater, harder to resolve, and more unfair." (Text Chap. 25)

Obama's crowd, so-called "Progressives," have made dishonorable political progress by repeating their mantras over and over and over again, year after year. For example, the media repeating so many millions of times that health care is broken and can only be fixed by government starts influencing even free market conservatives like Mitt Romney to disastrously toy with the idea.

Libertarians need to learn this much from Progressives- mantras work. Libertarians need to repeat week in, and week out, again and again and again and again shouting it from the mountain tops: Sacrifice is not the answer.

The world is languishing on the altar of sacrifice. Among political movements, only libertarians have the appropriate answer. But libertarians need to quit fiddling and commit themselves to not being sidetracked from the real solution.

Obama Doesn't Understand, "Rights" Are Freedoms!

President Obama's fellow travelers can often be heard saying things like, "health care is a right." Such a nice sounding liberal-progressive pipe dream! But a horrible perversion of a glorious concept! Yet we probably should keep in mind, as Ayn Rand wrote, "The concept of individual rights is so new in human history that most men have not grasped it fully to this day." So while not supporting President Obama we forgive him because he knows not what he does.

It's up to libertarians and those who are somewhat attracted to libertarian ideas to educate America as to the nature of rights, namely that rights are freedoms, a right is a freedom to act.

We can use Ayn Rand's description of the concept:

A “right” is a moral principle defining and sanctioning a man’s freedom of action in a social context. There is only one fundamental right (all the others are its consequences or corollaries): a man’s right to his own life. Life is a process of self- sustaining and self-generated action; the right to life means the right to engage in self-sustaining and self-generated action-which means: the freedom to take all the actions required by the nature of a rational being for the support, the furtherance, the fulfillment and the enjoyment of his own life.

The concept of a “right” pertains only to action—specifically, to freedom of action. It means freedom from physical compulsion, coercion or interference by other men.

Thus, for every individual, a right is the moral sanction of a positive—of his freedom to act on his own judgment, for his own goals, by his own voluntary, uncoerced choice. As to his neighbors, his rights impose no obligations on them except of a negative kind: to abstain from violating his rights.

Libertarians somewhat more than conservatives, and infinitely more than so-called "progressives," recognize that rights are freedoms to act. Thus, for example, legislation like Obamacare, which does impose obligations on neighbors (the mandate to buy health insurance), is a violation of an individual's natural right to choose for oneself whether or not to buy health insurance ... and therefore must be repealed.

Democratic Party: Enablers Of No Progress

The above video hits the nail on the head. A free market devoid of political intervention does not enable continuing self-destructive behavior. In a free market, lessons are quickly learned and corrections made. The Democratic Party, on the other hand, is dedicated to relieving people of responsibility, unburdening them from the difficulties of learning their lessons, enabling them to make mistakes and still profit. Democrats are enablers.

It might be said that libertarians who flirt with the Democratic Party don't really understand the issues. So maybe this principle needs to be stated clearly: All issues championed by the Democratic Party boil down to forcing redistribution of wealth and enabling irrational behavior.

Do not suppose we libertarians have come to bring peace to the earth. We have not come to bring peace, but to allow people the freedom to learn their lessons even if their choice is to learn the hard way ... a way which is rarely peaceful until the lesson is learned.

Some religions would say the only reason we are on earth is to learn lessons. But you don't have to be religious to see that the entire human race is rendered weak and unfit when people are "rescued" from learning their lessons. Democratic "progressives" are not progressive at all, but enablers of degeneracy and devolution.

How The Tea Party Movement Aids Libertarians

The Tea Party anthem, "I am America," sung by popular singer Krista Branch, is very inspirational in the sense that it invites us to feel our spirit and take a stand. Tyranny cannot make nearly as moving a video. It is impossible to make a video which could really motivate people to shove socialized medicine down each other's throats, or move people to tax each other into poverty. But a Tea Party video can be moving. Like it or not, Tea Party associates are motivated by a spirit which dwells beneath surface appearances ... the spirit of liberty.

Also like it or not, the Tea Party movement was started by libertarians, even now has a strong libertarian presence, and will continue to serve very well to spread many libertarian ideas. Libertarianism is enhanced greatly by the Tea Party movement in at least two very important ways: 1. Tea Partiers are calling widespread attention to the corrupt nature of the thugs running the U.S. legislative and executive branches of government; and 2. Tea Partiers are increasingly inserting libertarian ideas into the mainstream of political dialogue.

But there are probably many other ways the Tea Party movement aids libertarians ... and always last but not least is the Tea Party's call to freedom, which is a call to abandon excess intellectualism and feel our spirit. As Ayn Rand so astutely pointed out, intellectualism divorced from verification with our indwelling spirit leads to hideous man-made constructs, such as Marxism. But our spirit is free and urges us from within to create outer political conditions of freedom. And that inner urge can be awakened by inspirational songs. Thank you, Krista!

More Libertarian Political Wins

Socialists could not win elections using their own Socialist Party, which was too obviously ideological. So they infiltrated the Democratic Party, won elections as Democrats, then slowly but surely made the Democratic Party their own. There are no longer any "States Rights Democrats" never mind individual rights Democrats. All who remain in the party of Obama are Democrats in name only ... DEM - ONS.

Most libertarians would like to avoid politics, but those who are realists recognize the need to sometimes be involved in politics as a defense of their rights. If libertarians do not defend freedom, who will? Although libertarians don't want to be known as RINOS, or DEMONS, or any other labeled party crashers, if they cannot start winning elections using the Libertarian Party, then they need to start winning using the Republican Party. To stand by and helplessly watch freedom disappear into oblivion is not a rational option.

Whether they enter politics as LPers or as Republicans, libertarians need an election strategy, an overall plan of action and system of tactics for winning elections.

On these pages we have from time to time published "Election Strategy Memos," which have advocated such novel (for libertarians) ideas as "don't alienate those whose vote you need," and "campaign on issues which are highly popular but poorly represented by your opponents." For this writing, we turn to a very successful political operative to examine a few more campaign principles.

In their book "2010 Take Back America" Dick Morris, along with Eileen McGann, outline how Republicans can beat the Democratic Party in November 2010. Let's look at 7 of their steps and see their application to libertarians.

1. Debunk the myth of the "moderate" Democrat

Remember Barry Goldwater's famous saying (written by libertarian Karl Hess): "I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. Let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue." A libertarian candidate need only ask his audience: If liberty is on one end of the political spectrum and tyranny on the other end of the spectrum, what does "moderation" mean? Willingness to accept some tyranny? Did your ancestors come to America to accept some tyranny? Does your heart and soul really want you to accept some tyranny?

2. Nationalize the campaign and make Obama the issue

Your opponent may be quite popular locally. Or your opponent's party might be popular in your area. To bad-mouth your opponent or your opponent's party is a pig-headed losing strategy. On the other hand, 70% or more of Americans think the federal government in Washington is headed in the wrong direction. So campaign against the federal government in general or against the one person who is the most recognizable current symbol of everything that is wrong with Washington.

3. Don't be limited by ideology

For libertarians this translates to: "Grow up! Ideology doesn't win elections with common folks. The vast majority of voters do not vote ideology." So libertarians need to refrain from flaunting their ideology. In fact, they need to emphasize their ideology as little as possible. Can you imagine socialists having won elections and taken over the Democratic Party by flaunting their socialism? On the contrary, they practically hid their socialism while campaigning to win. Libertarians will never abandon their ideology; they will simply win with campaign issues that resonate with the majority of voters, non-ideological issues which nonetheless make winners.

4. Do not move to the center

This is a continuation of the third principle. When voters are feeling that the federal government is on the wrong track, they want debate. Even though they are turned off by rigid ideologues, they do want "a choice, not an echo," to borrow again from Barry Goldwater. They want to hear about new possibilities, not same old center, same old center.

5. Offer positive alternatives

Libertarians have forever sabotaged themselves by branding themselves as noisy complainers. Voters don't want to hear complaints. They want to hear possible solutions. Here are Dick Morris' suggestions for positive Republican goals (almost all of which libertarians can easily support):
a.) An end to earmarks
b.) A ban on families of members of Congress serving as lobbyists.
c.) No free travel paid for by foundations or lobbyists.
d.) No tax increases (libertarians can promise tax decreases).
e.) A line-item veto.
f.) Full disclosure of Congress members' net worth, debts, investments, etc.
g.) Ban taxpayer funding for any aspect of political campaigning.
h.) Establish special prosecutor for Congressional ethics violations.
i.) Ban spouses of Congress members being employed or serving on boards of organizations which receive federal funds.
j.) Full online publication of all committee votes.
k.) Ban Congress members or staffers from later serving lobbyists.
l.) Dock the pay of Congress members who are absent more than 10% of the time.

6. Stay on offense

To defend oneself is to attack one's own essence, which needs no defense. Defensive politicians do not win elections.

7. Answer every attack ad

The preemptive answer: "You watch! My opponent will be attacking me on ________. That's because he doesn't have any positive solutions, just the same old insanity."

The immediate response: "I just heard my opponent attacked me regarding ____________. This is untrue and he knows he can't prove it. He is using attack as a distraction from his own inability to cleanse himself of the stench of Washington deal making. "

Thanks to Dick Morris for the above reminders. But there is one more campaign clue that trumps them all. While socialists are mired in joyless, loveless self-loathing (they need your prayers), libertarians can afford to let it all out ... all the unbridled joy and overflowing love that is inside bursting forth for people to feel. Who among normal folks wouldn't vote for a candidate who is a living example of that kind of freedom?

Robin Hood, Francis of Assisi, and the libertarian mind!

When asked to define libertarianism in a single fundamental core statement, most libertarians answer with some version of what has been called the "non-aggression principle." For example, quoting from the Libertarian Party's Statement of Principles: "We hold that all individuals have the right to exercise sole dominion over their own lives, and have the right to live in whatever manner they choose, so long as they do not forcibly interfere with the equal right of others to live in whatever manner they choose."

Astute observers might detect behind the last part of this principle a hint of the universal Golden Rule: "Don't treat others in a way you would not want to be treated." Libertarians, however, recognize that the Golden Rule as usually stated leaves the door open for rights violation in politics: "Since I don't mind paying a fair share, I have no problem forcing a fair share out of others." (The psychological denial device used by advocates of taxation.) Not comfortable with forcing others even to "do what is deemed fair," libertarians look for a more clearly stated specification of the Golden Rule.

"We really can't live according to the spiritual guidance we are hearing inside if in a given area of life we are being forced," some libertarians say. Other libertarians who live more in their intellect and less in their spirit also have pretty much the same argument: "I can't benefit my life (or for that matter anyone else's life) using my reasoning mind if in some area of life I am being forced."

Actually a more accurate name for the fundamental principle of most libertarians would be: "non-violation principle," to include such violations as theft, threats, harassment, and other encroachments on free agency (including most of the 10 Commandments). Libertarians do recognize that being forced is not the only obstacle to the fullness of life. For example, usually they mention fraud as part of their "non-violation principle." From the Libertarian Party's platform preamble: "We believe that respect for individual rights is the essential precondition for a free and prosperous world, that force and fraud must be banished from human relationships, and that only through freedom can peace and prosperity be realized."

The Libertarian Party's use of the word "banished" above sounds dictatorial, but let's see what it might really mean in the context of normal libertarian attitude.

Some libertarians adhere to the Robin Hood Principle which recognizes the morality of using force to neutralize the original initiators of force. These libertarians might see a proper role for an infrastructure of laws which delineate the protection of rights and for government force to back such laws which neutralize violators.

Then there are other libertarians who reject altogether government laws and force, basically trusting the spiritual principle that we draw to us according to our own consciousness, so if our minds are free of any inclination to violate others we will not be violated; if we extend only love, only love will come our way - the Francis of Assisi Principle.

Strangely enough, both Robin Hood and Francis of Assisi are said to have lived and spread their influence during exactly the same era, right at the beginning of the Thirteenth Century, when they were both heavily influenced by roving troubadours who proclaimed widely in song and poetry the Cathar teachings of love and freedom, thought to originate from Mary Magdalene.

Rand Paul and Libertarian Success

Rand Paul's winning the Republican nomination for Senator from Kentucky with 59% of Republican primary voters, and now leading in the general election polls, gives the libertarian movement new hope. But much more importantly, it gives libertarians a template for success.

The crucial mistake Rand Paul did not make, which most libertarian candidates consistently make to sabotage themselves, is demonize the Republican Party and alienate all the many thousands of voters who have historically voted for Republican candidates. In this respect, Rand Paul was smarter than most libertarians.

Here is the principle: libertarians cannot win elections, or even broadly influence people via the election process, if they are seen as anti- all Republicans. Voters who have historically supported Republicans will tune out and dismiss libertarians who voice blanket condemnations of the party which in the past has felt like home to them.

But there is a deeper underlying principle: when you attack anyone, you are really saying something about yourself. Here's how Jesus teaches it:

"Only the self-accused condemn. You never hate your brother for his "sins", but ONLY for your own. Whatever form his sins appear to take, the form obscures the fact that you believe it to be yours, and therefore meriting a just attack." -Jesus Christ in A Course in Miracles

This of course is a much deeper psychology than most people care to look at, so Jesus offers a solution in the simplest possible terms: Give up attack thoughts.

"The world you see is a vengeful world, and everything in it is a symbol of vengeance. Each of your perceptions of “external reality” is a pictorial representation of your own attack thoughts. One can well ask if this can be called seeing. Is not fantasy a better word for such a process, and hallucination a more appropriate term for the result?

"If the cause of the world you see is attack thoughts, you must learn that it is these thoughts which you do not want. There is no point in lamenting the world. There is no point in trying to change the world. It is incapable of change because it is merely an effect. But there is indeed a point in changing your thoughts about the world. Here you are changing the cause. The effects will change automatically." -Jesus Christ in A Course in Miracles

This is a lesson libertarians will eventually learn. There is no value in attack, only self-sabotage. In the meantime, Rand Paul, by appealing to rather than attacking Republican voters, has taken a step in the right direction.

Heading into midterm election season in America we are faced with an illusory alternative: Caesar in Democratic Party clothing, or in some districts Little Caesar in Republican Party clothing. Apparently what makes the illusion saleable is the mistaken idea (used by Caesar as propaganda) that Jesus Christ was a socialist who supported taxation.

Fascists, communists, and progressives (all three branches of socialism), even after all the misery they have created the world over in the last 100 to 150 years, even now still aim a loud speaker toward us blaring the long broken record of their propaganda mantra: “Jesus was a socialist,” by which they try to convince us that Jesus advocated using government force or threat of force to redistribute wealth.

Nonetheless, the illusion could not be sold to the public if it were not for modern conservatives insisting that Jesus supported taxation. If someone tries campaigning against taxation, which is the primary tool of government redistribution of wealth, even conservatives who believe they are conserving the freedom America originally promised can be heard helping the socialists make noise by droning, “Well, after all, Jesus advocated paying taxes.”

But did he? Maybe it’s time to look at the words of Jesus himself.

Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. "Teacher," they said, "we know you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren't swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are. Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"

But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, "You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? Show me the coin used for paying the tax." They brought him a denarius, and he asked them, "Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?"

"Caesar's," they replied.

Then he said to them, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's." (Matthew 22:16-21)

The intent of the Pharisees was to catch Jesus making an anti-taxation utterance. They knew most his followers were strongly anti-government who hated being forced to pay taxes. Surely they could lure him into saying taxes collected by force (armed robbery), or threat of future harm (extortion), are immoral. Then they would have a case against him to take to the Roman governor.

Jesus saw through the attempted trap. He knew if he said, “It is wrong to pay taxes,” he would be arrested for sedition before his appointed time. If he said, “It is right to pay taxes,” the pharisees could shout that this is a teacher who supports an immoral system. Either answer would sabotage his ministry.

By not saying it is right to pay taxes but not saying it is wrong either, Jesus avoided the trap and at the same time taught his disciples what is really important. On the one hand, Jesus was basically saying: “Your devotion to God and to God’s work is more important than petty ego-vested support or petty ego-resistance regarding an immoral earthly system.” At the same time, Jesus was implying that God is in charge and the immoral robbery and extortion of taxation will in time create its own karma. The secondary meaning of his words in essence was: “Keep your attention on God. Caesar will get what is coming to him.”

Jesus was no socialist and he was no advocate of taxation. If he were an advocate of taxation, he would not have stated, as he did in the original unedited version of A Course in Miracles, miracle principle #23: Miracles make time and tide wait for all men. They can heal the sick and raise the dead because man himself made both death and taxes, and can abolish both.

Libertarians have always understood that the federal government (not to mention various state and local government agencies) has been violating the rights of citizens forever.

The proper role of government is to respond to rights violations such as theft, murder, threat of imminent force, fraud, etc. Libertarians understand that any "majority rule" government initiative which is not aimed at responding to rights violation is a violation of the rights of some minority ... a dictatorship of the majority ... and is inherently immoral even if the minority is only one citizen.

No majority is ever right to force a man to live by their dreamed up government programs, as long as that man has violated the rights of no one else.

"Holy 10 Commandments! If we lived by that idea, the government would never do anything but track down and prosecute true criminals, or defend against invaders!"

Could we live with such a novel idea?

Now if for years and years and years people have been willing to allow government to run roughshod over citizen's rights, why is it that all of a sudden in 2010 people are almost "up in arms" about government violating their rights?

Is it the blossoming of years of libertarian activism?

Is it certain dangers in George W. Bush's Patriot Act?

Could it be the result of Ron Paul's 2008 Presidential run?

Might it be Obama's attempt at health insurance dictatorship?

Or are we seeing a sort of divine "perfect storm" socially. Maybe so-called "liberal progressives," who spiritually speaking are neither liberal nor progressive, are experiencing their 666 ... the last desperate attack of their humpty-dumpty ego as it teeters before falling off the wall?

Tea Party Movement Libertarian God-send

These are values libertarians can support. Even anarchist libertarians can surrender for a season their pie-in-the-sky intellectual constructs and admit that severely limited government is far better than massive out-of-control slave-master government.

There has always been a huge pressing question for American libertarians who feel the urge to work for freedom. "Should I defend freedom by supporting a third party; or should I infiltrate and influence one of the major American political parties from within?" To libertarians, both are distasteful alternatives. Third parties have virtually no chance to gain traction, while the major parties seem impossible to effectively infiltrate.

But wait! A new alternative has surfaced. The Tea Party movement which has arisen in the last year basically as a slave rebellion now offers freedom fighters a mechanism for working within an enormously influential movement without having to pledge loyalty to any specific political party.

The evil politician, Mike Huckabee, has stated an important truth of American politics: the two major parties offer the only logical infrastructure for political progress. He observes that third parties would love to run a train, but have no tracks laid. Meanwhile, regardless of the corruption of their current leaders, both the Republican and Democratic Party have miles and miles of tracks laid over many, many years. Thus political progress these days requires supporting candidates who are willing to use the infrastructure of one of the major parties.

Socialists long ago realized this infrastructure truth of American politics and worked tirelessly to take over the Democratic Party. Obama is proof of their success. Huckabee and his religious (but sometimes not so spiritual) Christians would like to take over the Republican Party. But libertarians can stop Huckabee in his tracks, by working within the Tea Party movement.

Tea Party movement speakers have again and again insisted they are not interested in "social issues," by which they refer to the kinds of laws Huckabee's religious storm troops want to force on everyone. Tea Party activists are working only for limited government, fiscal responsibility, and free markets.

In the Tea Party movement, libertarians have found a mechanism for enough success to give us breathing room.

Is it possible that David Boaz, executive vice president of the Cato Institute, was extremely moved by 'Avatar' and found himself stretching for an intellectual reason to justify his appreciation of the film? Because Na'vi "property rights" is quite a stretch.

David even admits in his article that in the context of Na'vi society one could only think of "property rights" in a collectivist sense. It's pretty sad when a libertarian writer has to resort to collectivist thinking to make a point, wouldn't you say?

David knows 'Avatar' has nothing to do with property rights as the term is commonly used. Yet the film still appeals to libertarians. What is the real reason?

It is a reason which cannot be easily grasped by intellectuals who have trained themselves not to listen to their spiritual nature. It is one's spirit which responds to 'Avatar,' as it should be with the response to all good art. In the dark of a movie theater, sometimes intellectuals like David Boaz actually let go and let their spirit be felt, wouldn't you say?

The intellectual David Boaz, needing to defend his addiction to intellectualism, quickly decided it was necessary to belittle the fact that the Na'vi people live in tune with their spirit. He writes derisively: "Sure, the Na'vi -- who, like all of the people in lefty dreams, are psychically linked to one another and to all living creatures."

The reason libertarian intellectuals do not attract a larger audience is that "all people psychically linked to one another" is not a leftist dream, but a reality. It is only addicted intellectuals who do not allow themselves to feel and experience their underlying link to others ... and therefore others have little incentive to feel rapport with them. It's called the "Obama Syndrome." Failure to connect. But it is also suffered seriously by libertarian intellectuals.

Yet intellectual David's spirit craves connection with all individuals, which is why his spiritual nature responds to 'Avatar.' More importantly, David's spirit knows that the success of libertarianism depends on libertarians finding a balance that allows their spirit to guide their intellectualism so when they do speak truth people will feel it.

Libertarianism Coming On Strong?

The above article would have us believe that a growing resurgence in libertarian sentiment is a "backlash" reaction to the Democratic Party's move into full-fledged fascism. Certainly there is some truth to this, but it cannot be the whole story.

Franklin Roosevelt's fascism was far more inclusive. FDR's brain trust had almost to a man visited Joseph Stalin in the Soviet Union and liked what they saw. In the Roosevelt Administration there was a long standing worship of Mussolini's fascism and conscious attempts to imitate Stalin-style planning by government bureaucrats. Yet there was no huge widespread "Tea Party in the streets" reaction to Roosevelt's policies.

Today's libertarian resurgence has much more to do with the ripening fruit of seeds planted by libertarians dedicated to "educating the public." For years, the Libertarian Party has not been interested in winning elections, as evidenced by their self-defeating stands favoring marijuana legalization, wide open borders, and "do nothing" foreign policy. But beneath the surface of their self-sabotage, certain truths were being voiced and heard by ears eager for truth.

Libertarians have taught the public that government planning is inevitably inefficient and thug-like, that government manipulation of the money supply is always disastrous, that taxation is theft, and that people learn their lessons more efficiently and build more personal spiritual strength when their government stays out of their lives and lets them make their own decisions.

Libertarianism is the political infrastructure which promotes personal responsibility, personal self-esteem, and the gaining of personal spiritual qualities such as genuine love and respect for one's neighbors. Whereas Democratic Party fascism destroys these values in people, libertarianism builds and strengthens them.

Yes, there is a reaction to the blatant arrogance of the Obama Administration's fascism, but the pendulum has swung back in the direction the American Founding Fathers had in mind. And it might well swing to an even more clear expression of liberty than ever before.

Yes, Ron Paul once ran as a candidate for the Libertarian Party. But it did not take him long to realize that working through the LP is not the way to have any meaningful influence in American politics.

If you want your ideas to become influential in the realm of politics, you must work within one of the two major American political parties. But freedom lovers can no longer work within the Democratic Party which has become the fascist dictator party in America. The only choice for really serious American patriots is to make yourself heard within the Republican Party.

Obama Health Care: What Would Ben Franklin Do?

Conservatives usually cry out for smaller government. But "smaller government" is a relative concept, isn't it? Smaller than what? Smaller than Abraham Lincoln's miscreation? Smaller than Woodrow Wilson's Frankenstein? Smaller than Franklin Roosevelt's behemoth? Smaller than Barack Obama's monstrosity? Conservatives generally don't have a baseline measure. They leave the door open for hundreds of thousands of government functions which were not included by America's Founding Fathers.

Libertarians also want smaller government ... but smaller than the original United States government created by the Founding Fathers. Libertarians will gladly prove to all who will listen that even Ben Franklin and his friends went too far, relegating too many functions to the Federal Government they set up.

Yet at least libertarians have a starting baseline: No government function is appropriate if it wasn't mentioned in specific detail in the original 1787 Constitution and specifically implemented by the original 1789 U.S. Government.

To be sure, the original Constitution did contain the words "promote the general Welfare," which are subject to every possible good and evil interpretation from laissez-faire capitalism to Marxist socialism. But the Founding Fathers did not have in mind a wealth distribution state. Benjamin Franklin, who was very active and influential in the creation of the U.S. Constitution said this: "The Constitution only gives people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself."

Notice that Ben Franklin and his friends purposely did not include universal health care as a function of the government they created. If government mandated health care was so desperately important, as Barack Obama and his cronies would love us to believe, it would have been included as a specified function in the original government.

The truth is government forcing people to sign up for health insurance when they don't want health insurance is tyranny. Here's what Ben Franklin said about tyranny: "Rebellion against tyrants is obedience to God."

Health Care Dictatorship: Mormon Policy?

Dictatorship in Harry Reid's Senate Health Bill "But those who don't purchase insurance (even with those incentives) will face fines - $75 the first year, $350 the second, and $750 after that."

And what do you suppose happens if you don't want insurance and don't pay the fines? You will not be hounded for years by IRS tax collectors, right? Surely you are not going to have your property confiscated as if you were American colonial rabble subservient to the wishes of His Majesty, King of England, wouldn't you say? Certainly government agents will not attempt to handcuff you and drag you to jail if you resist having your property taken, and there is no chance you will be shot if you fight being arrested, right?

Harry Reid is an addicted dictator like all the other "liberal progressives" in congress. He wants to think of himself as a Mormon. Teaching of the Mormon religion regarding political freedom: "All men are, or ought to be free, possessing unalienable rights, and the high and noble qualifications of the laws of nature and of self-preservation, to think, and act, and say as they please, while they maintain a due respect to the rights and privileges of all other creatures, infringing upon none." (HC 5:156)

Notice that Mormon teaching does not say men need to be free to, "act as they please except in the case of health care insurance." An honest Mormon who lives in accordance with Mormon teachings is far more libertarian than the so-called "liberal progressives" of the Democratic Party. Compare the Mormon teaching above with a principle of the Libertarian Party:

From Libertarian Party Statement of Principles: "We hold that all individuals have the right to exercise sole dominion over their own lives, and have the right to live in whatever manner they choose, so long as they do not forcibly interfere with the equal right of others to live in whatever manner they choose."

All Mormons should call upon leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to denounce and excommunicate Senator Harry Reid. If Mormon leaders cannot take such a principled stand, why should anyone ever want to consider joining the Mormon Church?

It is far too easy (intellectually lazy) to conclude that Jesus Christ and Ayn Rand are miles apart in what they teach. Nothing is further from the truth. It is only necessary to juxtapose the words of Ayn Rand with the words of Jesus to see they teach exactly the same.

Ayn Rand summarizes her teaching this way:

"My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute."
— Ayn Rand, Appendix to Atlas Shrugged

Let's look at the words of Jesus Christ regarding these four elements: 1. heroic being, 2. happiness as purpose, 3. productiveness, and 4. reason as absolute.

Let's start with the idea that man must choose to be a heroic being. Here is how Jesus Christ says it:

Be not content with littleness, but be sure you understand what littleness is, and why you could never BE content with it. Littleness is the offering you gave YOURSELF. You offered this in place of magnitude, AND ACCEPTED IT.

But what you do not realize, each time you choose, is that your choice is your evaluation OF YOURSELF. Choose littleness, and you will NOT have peace, for you will have judged yourself UNWORTHY of it. And whatever you offer as a substitute, is much too poor a gift to satisfy you. It is essential that you accept the fact, and accept it gladly, that there is NO form of littleness that can EVER content you. You are free to try as many as you wish, but all you will be doing is to delay your home-coming. For you will be content ONLY in magnitude, which IS your home. (A Course in Miracles: Text Chap. 15 "Littleness vs. Magnitude")

What about happiness as the moral purpose of man's life? Here is what Jesus Christ teaches:

You have surely noticed an emphasis throughout our recent lessons on the connection between fulfilling your function and achieving happiness. This is because you do not really see the connection. Yet there is more than just a connection between them; they are the same. Their forms are different, but their content is completely one. (A Course in Miracles: Workbook Lesson 66 "My happiness and my function are one.")

Jesus Christ affirms man's productive nature in every aspect:

No one can suffer loss unless it be his own decision. No one suffers pain except his choice elects this state for him. No one can grieve nor fear nor think him sick unless these are the outcomes that he wants. And no one dies without his own consent. Nothing occurs but represents your wish, and nothing is omitted that you choose. Here is your world, complete in all details. Here is its whole reality for you. Jesus Christ teaches that reality is the only absolute and reason the only way to know what is real. Here is how Jesus states it:

Reason cannot see sin, but CAN see errors, and leads to their correction. It does not value them, but their correction. But reason will also tell you when you think you sin you call for help, but if you will not accept the help you call for, you will not believe that it is yours to GIVE. And so you will not give it, thus MAINTAINING the belief (in sin). For uncorrected error of any kind deceives you about the power that is in you, to MAKE correction. (A Course in Miracles: Text Chap. 21 "Reason vs. Madness")

Certainly many Objectivists will scramble to find seeming differences between the teachings of Ayn Rand and Jesus Christ, as will many Christians. But what if seeming differences are just what the word "seeming" implies ... illusions dependent on one's interpretation which is in turn based on a very limited point of view from one's past learning?

If you are a Christian, maybe it would serve you to open your mind regarding the fundamental source of Ayn Rand's philosophy. If you are an Objectivist, maybe you would benefit from expanding your viewpoint to see not the way you've been led to believe Jesus sees but the way Jesus really sees.

It's like saying Mormonism is the third largest branch of Christianity in America behind Protestantism and Catholicism, or saying Christianity is the third largest religion in India behind Hinduism and Islam. On the other hand, libertarian Republicans are making great strides. The Democratic Party in America is seeped in the morality of evil: majority rule trumps individual rights. It's okay to rob from the truly productive members of society, as long as you have the votes. As John Galt puts it in Ayn Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged: "You may do whatever you please to your neighbor, provided your gang is bigger than his."

In the latest example, most Americans do not want government-mandated health care reform. Obama's answer: "Shove it down their throats! We won the election, didn't we?" We have the power, don't we?"

The question is: will Americans meekly "go along" after Obama's thugs pass their agenda into "law?" Or will Americans say, "Enough is enough! We will not cooperate with this! Nor will we pay for it!"

But wait a minute! Such resistance would be illegal. There are heavy financial penalties for "not going along." Ultimately you could end up in jail.

True enough, but notice ... you are safe if you don't produce anything. There is no penalty if you don't work. You will not be hounded by the IRS if you drop out and live below their artificially designated "poverty level." It is only the hard workers who are penalized, only society's producers.

Book Review: Will Ayn Rand FINALLY influence the American political right?

With Obama's fascism taking over America, the question arises: can the American political right find ways to stop America's headlong race down the road to serfdom?

To even have hope of stopping the leftist and union thugs who have come into power, right wing lovers of freedom must gain a thorough understanding of the left, and more importantly must come to understand how people on the right cause their own defeat by means of what Ayn Rand calls "the sanction of the victim."

In her new book, Goddess of the Market, University of Virginia historian Jennifer Burns goes along with the subtitle: Ayn Rand and the American Right, seeming to indicate that Ayn Rand might somehow have something to do with the modern political right wing.

Ayn Rand avoided contact with and spent a lot of time fighting the American right. She saw most right-wingers as hopelessly politically naive. If she were alive today she would most certainly pin responsibility for the Obama fascist takeover on the foolishness of the right.

Can America turn away from the road to serfdom? Unquestionably! But the American political right desperately needs the political insight which Ayn Rand provides. Because of this, the subtitle of Jennifer Burns' book might just serve the cause of freedom. With such a subtitle, maybe some right-wingers will be attracted to Ayn Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged.

One seemingly insurmountable barrier to the political right's willingness to really take seriously Ayn Rand's ideas is her loudly professed atheism. In this respect, Rand seems like a leftist. Therefore many on the American right knee-jerk reflexively stay away from Rand.

The problem is most people on the political right are hesitant to admit that a person can be spiritual without being religious. Since Rand is anti-religion, she couldn't possibly be spiritual, right?

Meanwhile, as if in a cosmic joke, the American political left has elevated Marxist ideas to religious status. The left will not question Marx, but accepts his nonsense on faith, mindlessly worships government, and works day and night and weekends 24-7 with furious religious fervor to expand government control over people.

If "libertarianism" means anything, it means abandonment now and always of government attempts to better the lives of citizens economically.

The Obama Administration is following exactly the same steps as the Roosevelt Administration took in the 1930s: attempting to "cure" an economic recession by vast government expenditures to fund utopian "welfare" programs. Just as in the 1930s, insane government spending is deepening the recession into a depression. Increasingly Americans find themselves at the mercy of a government elite who know not what they do.

Government by so-called "Progressives" can only be regressive, can only create more poverty than ever, can only lead to citizen-slaves going through the motions and feeling their spirit only in forbidden black markets, can only lead to martial law and slavery to government. Just as human beings were not born to live under water like fish or to fly from treetop to treetop like birds, so it is not and can never be a proper function of governments to provide for the economic welfare of people.

Libertarians say "No!" to the welfare state if it means the state telling people how they must live and robbing people of the opportunity to learn how to survive and thrive through lessons they create for themselves.

Libertarians are grounded in natural law, not man-made law. They see that human beings find it necessary to form governments for one and only one reason: to hold up before them reminders of the laws given by God (or by "common sense" if you consider yourself an atheist). People cannot live together in peace if they are allowed to murder each other, steal from each other, bear false witness (lie about each other), defraud each other, etc. The highest good for everyone is served only when men and women live by a "rule of law," but not just any law; not man-made law stiffling spirit in the hopes of lessening material challenges.

Amity Shlaes illustrates how stary-eyed communist sympathizers ruled during the Roosevelt Administration and would have wrecked the American economy forever had it not been for a few heroic men and women who said "No!" to an American fascism masquerading under the label "Progressive." Her book, The Forgotton Man, is a must read.

Surely Dr. Ron Paul would not call anyone "stupid," as has been Bill Clinton's habit. But maybe he would admit that "liberals" and "progressives" have fallen for brainwashing without considering every possible factor: past, present, and future; from the broadest viewpoint to the narrowest viewpoint, the forest to the trees, so to speak.

A free market is like what Christians call Holy Spirit, it knows everything (the interaction of every forest and every tree that ever existed) and serves everyone's best interests (even if one's best interests in a given situation are very tough lessons).

A free market is aware of facts which government planners could never know, which is why government planners always mess up society and a free market always makes everyone much better off in every way.

"Progressives," or as they used to be called "fascists," see problems with free market solutions, but as with the proverbial "beauty," "problems" are often in the eyes of the beholder, and at any rate government force can never be a moral solution to any "problem" other than some bad guy's immoral initiation of force or fraud.

Ron Paul knows that forcing people into a government system is wrong, and therefore cannot work. How can "liberals" and "progressives" be so blind as to not see this?

As the Obama administration continues to uncover their secret agenda which looks evermore like Hitler's Germany or Mussolini's Italy, Obama's approval rating has drifted downward. Americans might be slow to wake up and smell the putrid odor of tyrannical thugs in leadership positions, but like the hundredth monkey principle there comes a critical mass time when the truth can no longer be ignored. Then it becomes fun ... and dangerous; exciting ... and scary.

If the election of fascist Barack Obama flashed warning signs of dangerous and scary times ahead, the 9-12 march on Washington signals the beginning of exciting and fun times for libertarians. No longer are freedom lovers a 1% or 2% minority. The sleeping giant has awakened and libertarians can find allies everywhere.

In one respect, it's good that Barack Obama lied to Americans as to what his "fundamental change" of American society would look like. An angry people who feel they have been purposely tricked are much more exciting and fun to rub shoulders with than a close-minded people who only know how to spout party-line and never really look and see what is really happening.

Those who will participate in the 9-12 march on Washington are at least somewhat informed ... and angry. What a glorious opportunity for libertarians to gather friends and point out basic principles, the principles which differentiate freedom from fascism.

Health Care Dictatorship: The Real Issue

Libertarians have long sabotaged themselves by yelping about fringe issues which the general public doesn't care about, and by campaigning on a hundred and one little personal interests instead of one single overwhelmingly powerful and popular issue.

Looking at history, we see that the Republican Party was created in 1854 and won the U.S. Presidency in 1860, 6 years later ... because they let themselves be raised up by one single time-has-come emotional/spiritual issue- slavery.

Now another such issue has arisen, a real issue, and libertarians have their chance. It's no longer about motorcycle helmets or seat belts. It's about the dictatorship of the entire realm of everyone's deeply personal health care, and people are up in arms. Finally there is the one single earth-moving issue which libertarians can ride to success.

But will libertarians take advantage of the moment? While the proposed health care dictatorship has become a roaring fire threatening to bring a revolution, some libertarians can still be seen talking about puny little issues like medical marijuana and the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. That's equivalent to screaming to a man who is being pushed off a cliff that his trinkets might be stolen. At this moment in time, he doesn't care about his trinkets.

Sept. 12, 2009 is going to be huge, and offer enormous opportunities for libertarians. Will libertarians really be there?

Leftist Camille Paglia Thrashes Obama Health Care

"You can keep your doctor; you can keep your insurance, if you're happy with it, Obama keeps assuring us in soothing, lullaby tones. Oh, really? And what if my doctor is not the one appointed by the new government medical boards for ruling on my access to tests and specialists? And what if my insurance company goes belly up because of undercutting by its government-bankrolled competitor? Face it: Virtually all nationalized health systems, neither nourished nor updated by profit-driven private investment, eventually lead to rationing.

"I just don't get it. Why the insane rush to pass a bill, any bill, in three weeks? And why such an abject failure by the Obama administration to present the issues to the public in a rational, detailed, informational way? The U.S. is gigantic; many of our states are bigger than whole European nations. The bureaucracy required to institute and manage a nationalized health system here would be Byzantine beyond belief and would vampirically absorb whatever savings Obama thinks could be made. And the transition period would be a nightmare of red tape and mammoth screw-ups, which we can ill afford with a faltering economy."

Strangely, in her article Camille Paglia calls herself a libertarian. Is this becoming the new fad among leftist intellectuals? Will government worshippers start re-labeling themselves as libertarians even though they ultimately favor forcing government solutions on people? Will the label "libertarian" be hijacked like the long-ago redefined labels "liberal" and "progressive?"

Or is Camille Paglia in the early stages of transitioning to becoming truly libertarian, beginning to see the light in some areas but still unable to see truly clearly through the murky cloud of Marxist smog polluting the atmosphere like thick factory smoke around the university professors she hangs with?

Paglia still favors framing her discussion in terms of class differences. Choke! She cannot see that classes are imaginary constructs and there really are only individuals. In her article, she writes: "In general, middle-class children today are more closely supervised at pools because the family can afford to have a non-working parent at home -- a luxury that working-class kids rarely have." She cannot see that her beloved working-class people in the old days always had a non-working parent at home ... but that was before oppressive government taxation and government-caused inflation forced both parents to find work and leave children unsupervised.

In her article, Paglia shows that she has opened her eyes to a tiny squint and is beginning to see the immorality of the left. She writes, "The ethical collapse of the left was nowhere more evident than in the near total silence of liberal media and Web sites at the Obama administration's outrageous solicitation to private citizens to report unacceptable 'casual conversations' to the White House." What she cannot yet see is the left was never moral in the first place. There is nothing ethical about desiring to institute Utopian programs by government force. It is morally wrong to want to rob from rich people who have produced goods and services, and redistribute wealth to those who have not chosen to be producers.

So we say to Ms. Paglia, don't stop at opening your eyes just enough to see a glimmer of light. Go all the way. Go the distance. See the real cause of society's problems and the real solution. Become a real libertarian.

In the meantime, libertarians have been handed an issue from heaven: the attempt to force government health care on everyone. Will they ride this issue to the top? Or will they continue to blindly content themselves with low percentage issues?

You would have to have certain advance knowledge of all the effects of your judgment on everyone and everything. You would have to be absolutely sure that you didn't have the slightest slanted angle of perception. Who could possibly have this magnitude of information? Who except in the height of fantasy could imagine themselves to have such a totally all-seeing and all-knowing viewpoint? How many times have you been so thoroughly sure you knew the facts upon which to base correct judgment, only to find out later how wrong you were?

Because philosophers and lawyers are just like yourself, subject to limited information and limited perception, neither can you rely on even the very best of scholars using intellectual reasoning to help you discover what is truly good.

YOUR EMOTIONS CANNOT SHOW YOU WHAT IS TRULY GOOD

Your emotions are brought about by your thoughts and ideas. Since your thoughts are based on very limited information and a very limited viewpoint, so are your emotions. Should your thoughts not serve you well, neither will your emotions serve you well, even unto breakdown.

YOUR PHYSICAL BODY CANNOT SHOW YOU WHAT IS TRULY GOOD

Your physical body is literally only a servant doing the bidding of your thoughts and feelings. Would a man ever risk bodily danger for a higher good if his body was his guide?

ONLY YOUR SPIRITUAL NATURE CAN SHOW YOU WHAT IS TRULY GOOD

Your spiritual nature, on the other hand, because it is shared with every living being, knows what is truly good for all. Your spiritual nature is present inside you to influence, teach, and guide your thoughts, emotions, and physical body. Whether or not you listen inside yourself to your spiritual nature is another story, but your spiritual nature is inside of you waiting to be heard.

In any situation, if you quiet your thoughts, quiet your emotions, quiet the urges of your body ... and listen inside yourself to your spirit, you know what is the truly right thing to say or do. You don't need a legislature, or a philosopher, or a psychologist, or a church authority of any kind to tell you what is right. If you are honest with yourself, you know the answer is inside of you. Your spirit is your guide.

THE BEGINNINGS OF LAW

But you don't always listen inside yourself to your spirit, do you? Maybe sometimes you listen to your thoughts, emotions, or even the urges of your body, instead of listening to your spirit. Does your spirit know that you are not going to always listen deep inside? Of course. Your spirit knows about human shortcomings and mistakes.

So your spirit says, "Here ... in case you forget to listen inside yourself, I'll let you know in advance that I, your spirit, am never going to guide you to kill, nor am I ever going to guide you to commit adultery, nor am I ever going to guide you to steal, nor am I ever going to guide you to bear false witness against your neighbor. If you want to, you can call these laws."

Thus laws are born. In the beginning, laws are born of the spirit ... as reminders.

LAWS NOT OF THE SPIRIT

After a long time, when the beginning has been forgotten, laws are born not of the spirit, but of the egos of men and women ... true or false?

Listen inside. Do not listen to your intellectual mind's reasoning. Listen to your spirit. What do you hear? The laws made up by men and women are not necessarily the laws of your spiritual nature, true or false?

Therein lies the first and main reason why governments, legislatures, and laws should always be suspect. They may not be in rapport with the spiritual nature inside of men and women. They may be instruments of men and women's egos and not instruments of the spirit.

GOVERNMENT GUIDED BY THE SPIRITUAL NATURE

Yet the spiritual nature of men and women could move them to set up a government, true or false? Listen inside. Does your spirit inside say yes or no?

How many laws would a government need if it was based on men and women's spiritual nature? Three? Five? Ten, like the ten commandments? Probably very few, wouldn't you say? Listen inside and see what you hear.

How many laws would it take to assure that you would be a good citizen even if you didn't listen inside to your spirit at all times? A half-dozen basic laws having to do with stealing, murdering, raping ... that sort of thing? Or would it take 25 or 30 good laws written as basic principles to remind you? Listen inside to your spirit.

Would it take thousands of pages of tax code to make you a good citizen? Listen inside. What is your spirit saying?

NO NEED FOR A LEGISLATURE

So why not write up a constitution that outlines 25 or 30 good laws in basic principle and creates only two branches of government, the judiciary and the executive to make sure these few good laws are followed?

Another branch of government to invent new laws is not only unnecessary, but practically assures deviation from your original intent, true or false? Because if you set up a branch of government whose purpose is to make new laws, then when those law makers come to work in the morning, in order to feel good about themselves doing their job ... they are going to want to do what? Yes ... they are going to want to make up new laws.

What if no new laws are needed? No matter. Those law makers get paid to invent laws and they are going to want to do their job, right?

So if you are listening carefully inside yourself to your spirit you will hear that it doesn't take a lot of laws to keep you reminded to be a good citizen and once those basic few laws are identified you don't need a legislature making up new laws.

GOVERNMENT INVOLVEMENT MOST PEOPLE WANT

But what about all the good things that governments claim to do? Let's look at building interstate highways, for example. Let's listen inside and see if your spiritual nature wants you to have interstate highways, perhaps built by your government? Do you hear "yes"? Do interstate highways seem to be a good idea to your spirit? If so, now listen inside for a "yes" or "no" answer to these questions: Do you need a legislature to build an interstate highway? Do you need new laws to build an interstate highway? No. All you need is an executive branch which is given the authority to spend money for the purposes earmarked by people when they send in their voluntary donations.

Suppose the executive branch of government broadcasts a notice that says, "All those in favor of interstate highways, please send in your money voluntarily and it will be earmarked for interstate highways." Your spiritual nature would not be offended by such a notice, true or false? Listen inside. For a little while, suspend any intellectual arguments your mind wants to make as to why such a system would be difficult to make work. Maybe it wouldn't. Maybe it would. Your intellect couldn't possibly know because it doesn't have all the information it would need to make a judgment. For the moment, just listen inside and see if your spirit would be offended by such a notice.

No, your spirit is not offended. Why? First, because your spirit lit up at the thought of interstate highways, so interstate highways must be serving the common good. Second, and very important, your spirit is not offended by voluntary donations. Nobody is being forced against their will to pay for the highways.

YOUR SPIRITUAL NATURE DOES NOT USE FORCE

But what if the executive department of the government tried to force people to pay taxes to pay for the highways? Now your spirit might be offended, might it not? Because your spirit doesn't ever force you to be good or do good things. Your spirit suggests. Your spirit guides. Your spirit urges. Your spirit might even give you a very strong nudge in some direction if it is really important. But your spirit doesn't force you, does it? Your spirit leaves you free to make mistakes and learn from your mistakes.

Any proper government, guided by your spiritual nature, would leave you free to make mistakes and learn from your mistakes just as your spirit leaves you free, true or false? Listen inside.

Would your spirit ever guide you to use force? Yes, it may so guide you in certain situations. Your spirit might say inside of you, "It is wrong for that bully to be beating up on those kids! Go stop him!" You could very well be guided to use force to stop someone when that someone is breaking one of the basic spiritual laws, true or false?

The same principle applies to governments. Your spiritual nature would not be offended if your government used force to stop someone from breaking the basic spiritual laws. In fact, your spirit might rejoice when force is used in this manner. Putting a stop to the ego-initiation of force would be a spiritually appropriate response. For this reason you feel deep inside yourself that the establishment of defensive armies and police departments is moral, as long as there are safeguards against the abuse of power.

A THIRD BRANCH OF GOVERNMENT

What if the executive branch of your government began to use force not to stop others who had initiated force in the first place, but to further the ego-vested interests of men and women in positions of executive power? Or what if the judiciary branch of your government began to make judgments based not on the spiritual intent of the basic laws, but based on the ego-vested interests of men and women in positions to render ego-motivated judgments? In other words, what if your government started abusing its power?

Your inner voice, the voice of your spirit, might guide you thus: "In the hopes of guarding against the abuse of power, set up a third branch of government made up of elected representatives whose sole purpose is to monitor the activities of the other two branches of government to make sure they are not straying from their original mandates. Call this third branch of government ‘congress,' if it pleases you. But, like the executive and judiciary branches of government, this third branch would have no power to make new laws. This third branch of government would only serve as auditor of the other two branches of government and as a 'Watchdog of Liberty'."

But a watchdog has a bite as well as a bark, true or false? So this third branch of government would be given authority to dismiss the officials who are abusing power and oversee their replacement through specified processes. Members of this third branch of government would not get bored from lack of work. They would be auditing everything the other two branches of government were doing, making sure there were no abuses.

YET ANOTHER SAFEGUARD

Remember ... your spiritual nature is interested in you having a system of government which closely approximates the freedom that your spirit itself enjoys. If your government, which was created in the first place for the convenience of your spirit, began to take away freedoms that would rightly be yours if there were no government, then that government is no longer serving your spirit. So your spirit favors safeguards, true or false?

What if a particular political party became very adept at selling itself to the public and won effective control of all three branches of your government? Your spirit would see a problem with such a setup, true or false? Your spirit inside of you doesn't say, "The more the government is being controlled by one party, the better." Your spirit inside of you says, "The more safeguards against power accumulation, the better."

So in your original constitution you would be guided to include a clause that specifies that if a particular political party and it's allies dominate the auditor/watchdog branch of government, then the executive branch of government must be operated by members of a different and opposing political party. The mechanisms for resignations and replacements of officials would be spelled out in your constitution.

SUMMARY

Your spirit wants liberty safeguarded with as many safeguards as possible, because freedom is who you are in spirit. Freedom is your spiritual birthright. Your spirit is free and wants to mightily influence and uplift every area of your life. Your spirit does not want to be dampened and controlled by the egos of others. Your spirit works to free you of pain, sickness, suffering, and death; and bring you the experience of unimaginable happiness, joy, and love. But your spirit needs your freedom to do its work. A little bit of government is helpful and guided by your spirit. But government that does not enhance your freedom cannot be tolerated by your spirit, true or false?

Ayn Rand and Jesus Christ: Deep Similarities

Ayn Rand's intellectual genius was great, but far greater still was her willingness to tune in to her spirit, feel her spirit, live by her spirit, and write from her spirit. Her spirit has moved millions.

"When I studied Atlas Shrugged I was inspired to change the direction of my life totally. I literally owe my life to Ayn Rand."

How many times have we heard a statement such as this?

The quality in a fictional work which can change someone's life so dramatically is not the intellectualism of the work, but the spiritual foundation on which the intellectualism is built.

Intellectualism without a spiritual base is a painful torture which ultimately leads to terror and death, as Ayn Rand so perfectly illustrated with her fictional characters. But intellectualism which arises out of being in touch with one's spirit is a very different story, as those of us know who have read Atlas Shrugged.

Ayn Rand's heroes are fond of saying their antagonists are "mindless." But these antagonists are not altogether mindless in the sense of having no reasoning ability. Rather they are spirit-deprived, mindless in the sense of being out of touch with their spirit and even out of touch with what the workers on Dagny's railroad would call "common sense," which rises from one's spirit. Her antagonists could almost be said to be ONLY intellectual.

The fictional philosophers created by Ayn Rand are fond of saying, "check your premises." Not a bad idea, but what if one of your premises is so rooted in the depths or heights of your spirit that it cannot be put into words, like some of the wordless premises Dagny Taggart uses when she senses people's energy from afar and knows from "seeing" their energy whether they are serving life or serving death?

Ayn Rand throughout Atlas Shrugged writes of the spirit of man. She continually touches on highly advanced spiritual principles such as defenselessness, nonresistance, mind-body integration, non-contradiction, open-mindedness, the unreality of evil, and the reality of life without pain or fear or guilt ... principles thoroughly taught by Jesus Christ in A Course in Miracles.

Ayn Rand operated in a realm far beyond mere intellectualism, a realm of spirit where true genius is born.

What's wrong with the picture painted by the above video?

Usually when there is a common enemy, people have enough common sense to lay aside their differences and ban together to defeat the common enemy, right?

Normally when the common enemy is extremely powerful and there are potential dire consequences if the enemy were to gain complete control, people are wise enough hold their peace regarding their pet issues while working with allies on issues that bottom line are infinitely more important, wouldn't you say?

The question is: are libertarians capable of the kind of common sense and wisdom most people innately turn to?

If fascist socialist Democratic Party thugs are going to be stopped from destroying the spirit of America (and the world), libertarians are going to have to learn to work with Republicans who agree with some of their main premises while not yet "on board" in every respect, true or false?

Rather than go into Republican meetings and blasting off on pet libertarian themes, libertarians are going to have to focus on areas of agreement and keep quiet for a while (until the common enemy is defeated) when it comes to areas of disagreement, true or false?

Over time fascist socialists have taken over the Democratic Party. They didn't do so by going into Democratic Party meetings years ago and spouting the hardest to accept fascist socialist ideas.

Quite the opposite. They joined the Democratic Party and worked for Democratic Party candidates of all stripes ... thus earning their "Democrat" credentials and the respect of other Democrats. They gave the appearance of being Democrats, not fascist socialists. They paid their dues working within their Party until they could finally rise to the top and take control.

There is no reason why libertarians cannot take over the Republican Party, but they are going to have to pay their dues by getting along with other Republicans and working their way to the top, wouldn't you say?

In the real world you don't win success by insisting only you are right all the time. In the real world you don't gain supporters by judging everyone who disagrees with you as unworthy of your comradeship. The question is: are you a libertarian who is grown up enough to play in the real world?
