Libertarian Spirit Shared By Everyone

Nothing could be more self-defeating than to cater to the ego's insane logic that the lessor of two evils is not the greatest possible good between two likely alternative outcomes. And we have to admit ego is powerfully guiding many individuals in the libertarian movement. But how to get through to the insane?  Sometimes a principle is more easily illuminated if lifted out of the immediate (in libertarians' case, political) context: Pretend you have been chased into a slot canyon trap with only two ways out. Behind you, blocking the way you entered the canyon, is a very big violent gang who wants to kill you and kill anyone else in its path. Ahead of you, blocking the other way out, is another big but somewhat less violent gang who only wants to rob you of your money but then let you pass ... to live again another day. Inside your head you hear two voices. The voice of your ego is shouting, "Don't choose the lesser of two evils! There must be a third way."...

The human race is evolving and will surely someday be able to live in peace and brotherly love and mutual joy without what we think of as "government." Some would say that at this stage of our evolution it is governments that are the destroyers of joy and peace and brotherly love. Yet most people, maybe a high 90 percentile of all people, still believe governments can somehow be made good, while anarchy is invariably bad. So how can Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney really reform government. For now, it would be better to work to install a system of governance which at least is totally voluntary and has no ability to force man-made programs on people. Let’s suppose they became brave enough to join their efforts with others and create a new constitution to market to people for adoption. And let’s suppose this constitution changed the complexion of governance in so that there would be no more taxation, no more man-made laws which offer the illusion of serving the public good bu...

Political labels have a way of eventually turning into political liabilities. "Liberal" comes to be hated as the opposite of actually liberal. "Progressive" is ultimately recognized as hindering progress and moving the world backwards. "Libertarian" falls victim to well-meaning but politically immature friends offering the public gross misperceptions. When out there campaigning, or dealing with the media, or even talking to non-libertarians, better to use words which are hard to misinterpret or be twisted into negatives. "Freedom fighter" doesn't work because in most people's minds someone who is fighting for something is in conflict. But conflict is the antithesis of freedom. Either we are experiencing freedom inside ourselves or we are experiencing conflict.
